It has been a long time since an update, and we feel its time to start explaining everything that will be happening over the next few months as we’re pretty excited about what’s been going on.
When we were focusing heavily on Imagine Nations, we came to the conclusion that the project was just out of our reach. Whether the current pace was going to take a decade to complete the game in the current vision, or we were missing valuable team members to properly complete all the content necessary (especially on the art side), the project was hitting a brick wall. We sat down a little while after we shot the Weekly Videos segments and discussed the future of the project, and the studio overall.
We came to the conclusion that it would be better suited for Imagine Nations if we completed some smaller games first to allow us to build a track record and generate the funds necessary to speed up Imagine Nations development. And there was an old concept that would be just the sort of thing to dust off and complete.
And so, we’d like to announce Warkeep!
Warkeep is our take on the tower defense genre, shifting the focus from the traditional top-down view to something more akin to a side scroller. It combines elements from your favorite tower defense games with block matching puzzles like Tetris to allow easy creation of your keep no matter the enemies attacking it. We’ve been having a blast with this game, and the demo for it is complete and ready to launch on mobile, WebGL, and all PC platforms. We’re inviting all backers for Imagine Nations to reach out and give it a try before we launch it publicly in the next few weeks. Imagine Nations backers will get full access to any games leading up to Imagine Nations’ early access launch as our thanks for having to wait so long for launch. If you’d like to join Slack and be involved in the Warkeep demo, please email me at email@example.com and I will invite you in immediately. Or just hang tight and the public links will be available within the next few weeks for whichever platform you prefer.
We will be setting up a crowdfunding campaign to get Warkeep moving forward. While the game features are complete, we are currently using placeholder art and SFX to allow us to present the game vision. As such, the project will require a budget to design new art and audio assets to launch it as a complete game experience. This campaign will begin when the website goes live, and will link inside the game when completed. We hope everyone enjoys the game as we have, and we have some great long-term plans for Warkeep that will really expand it out for everyone that enjoys this style of games.
On top of this, we will be launching a more refined version of Imagine Nations focused mainly on the traditional city building games with a defined map border. It will contain the bare bones features we’re aiming for with regards to this portion of Imagine Nations (ability to move around the defined cubic map, manage the town from top view as well as in 1st/3rd person, and simulated entities living and working in the town), and we will continue to refine from this point as we work back to the full scope (funds permitting). The goal is to build funds from Warkeep to properly develop Imagine Nations while starting at a much smaller scope than we had before. We have a rough estimate of this simpler version of Imagine Nations aimed for the end of the year, but this depends heavily on Warkeep’s outcome both in terms of its funding, and how well its received at launch.
And with the increased focus on Imagine Nations, I feel its only fair to at least show this in terms of the current workings of the project before we shift the team from Warkeep over:
In other news, Cat Banana Studios is now:
This is now something that better identifies us (with a long backstory to go along with the name for anyone that asks) versus the previous name based around members of the team that aren’t involved anymore. Yes we still love cats and bananas and always will. We will be setting up a new website for QOG as well as websites for Warkeep and an updated version for Imagine Nations throughout September as we get prepared for Warkeep’s demo launch. More to come soon.
